Large Chimbu, Papua New Guinea, Mace Head
A very large, circular macehead made of hard stone with raised central lip for insertion of shaft. The outer edges are chipped, the result of years of wear.
This comes from an area of mountain valleys which archaeological evidence suggests may have been occupied as long as 30.000 years ago.
Tribal fighting in the Chimbu region persisted well after Australian patrols began in 1940's. First Western contact in Chimbu occurred in 1934, when an Expedition, led by gold miner Michael Leahy and Australian patrol officer James Taylor, passed through.
The drilling of the hole and the mottled and smooth surface speak to its great age.
Rare in this size, condition and age.
Ex. Private Australian Collection.
8 in. x 1 in. // 20.32 cm. x 2.54 cm. // 3 lbs. / 1.35 kg.
