In 1917 Joseph Louis Marcillac (1870-1943), a Frenchman with deep ties to Polynesia, discovered this stone effigy on Rapa Iti Island, also known as “Little Easter Island”. We cannot help but be reminded of the “Venus of Willendorf” figure found half a world away, nine years earlier, evidence of the universality of the nourishing and protective goddess spirit.
