Ancient Inuit Aleutian Doll

$1,000.00

A superb ancient wooden Aleutian doll. Strong torso crowned by face with unusual headdress.

The Aleutian were known for their elaborate visors, crowns and headgears, at least one example collected at Unalaska on James Cook’s third voyage in 1778. The crown seen here may be an archaic form. Wooden prehistoric material from the Aleutians is particularly rare.

Hole in base for suspension. Excavated piece, in frozen ground for hundreds of years. Punuk or early Thule period.

(There is an excellent book “Aleut Art - Unangam Aguqaadangin” by anthropologist Dr. Lydia T. Black, published by the Aleutian/Pribilof Islands Association Inc. which is the best text we have found on Aleutian art.)

Length: 13 cm // 5 in

Ex. Paul Goldstein, Seattle.
