Ancient Unangax Aleutian Islands Doll
A superb ancient wooden Unangax Aleutian Islands doll. Strong torso crowned by face with unusual headdress.
The Aleutian were known for their elaborate visors, crowns and headgears, at least one example collected at Unalaska on James Cook’s third voyage in 1778. The crown seen here may be an archaic form. Wooden prehistoric material from the Aleutians is particularly rare.

(For Aleutian art see “Aleut Art - Unangam Aguqaadangin” by anthropologist Dr. Lydia T. Black, published by the Aleutian/Pribilof Islands Association Inc.)
