COMMENTS
In June 1994 June Wayne delivered the commencement address at California State University at Northridge on the grass outdoors where the ceremony took place.
The campus buildings had been destroyed by the 1994 Northridge earthquake occurring only months before. Having spent years studying and documenting in art the power of natural phenomena, including earthquakes, few could have provided greater perspective and solace to the graduating class. Wayne ended her address with this remarkable quote: “Have you been thinking of getting out of here? I have too. But where could we go that isn’t just as risky one way or another? And where is it so nice between disasters?" (from "June Wayne - A Retrospective” by Lucinda H. Gedeon, Neuberger Museum of Art, 1997.)
