“The Cognitos are dazzling topographies reflecting the brilliance of the sky from solid ground. “Wholly artificial in their materials, conceptually abstract, purged of theological, quixotic or mystical notions about the physical universe, the Cognitos paintings are nevertheless as true to nature as any 19th-century American outdoor landscape, emanating the peculiar impressionism of Los Angeles’s highly-colored (because smog-ridden) plein air.”
